Actually, the 34 lbs supposedly applied to the
7 foot 9 inch specimen, not the 8 foot 11 inch.
I think Jones may be right about Ditmars, and
you have a good point about the validity of
published records. Many tend to uncritically
accept information in print, especially if it
comes from an "authority." Unfortunately, with
the general devastation of the adamanteus species
population and the high mortality rates these
days, I would be surprised if someone produces a
wild 7+ footer in the future. My gut feeling is
that the Boswell record is accurate, but notice
that if we assume it includes the rattle, the
correct length for this animal was about 7 feet
8 inches. Of course we will probably never know
the truth of these old records. It is interesting
that the Peterson field guide uses 8 feet as the
official record for adamanteus, but only 7 feet
for atrox (actually 6 feet 11 7/8 inches). This
fact is virtually unknown amongst the big ranchers
in south Texas, many of whom seem to assume that
"everyone" knows that atrox gets well over 7 feet,
and don't consider a 7+ specimen particularly
noteworthy.
