Concerning Ditmar's claim, Jones makes the following statement: "I believe[it]to be a blatant lie that is nevertheless still accepted as fact by many, perhaps most herpetologists." In any event, over time, legends are often perpetuated in print, quoted and re-quoted by a succession of credible experts, and eventually appear as definitive facts in reference material, footnotes, and bibliographies. It is not always easy to trace the lineage of B.S. by just following the smell. Along the way, it gets spread around too much on everyone's shoes. I'd say an 8'11" (sans head!), 34 pound EDB fits this category quite well.
