I am not an academic herper and have never had pretensions to call myself as such. However, I have spent over a third of a century keeping snakes, reading literature both general and scientific on snakes, studying and collecting snakes in the wild, keeping and breeding them in captivity, attending conferences, talking to both academic and avocational herpers, working with veteranarians who had limited knowledge and in many other ways accumulating a fairly decent knowledge of herps. I have also given data to people working on masters and doctoral thesis and have offered several ideas for thesis. While I have no inclination to do such detailed research myself, I can appreciate and assimilate the work of others.
I am, however, a fairly intelligent and open-minded individual and can look at all sides of a situation.
The avocational herpers have a great store of knowledge which is available to the academic and state folks, should they ever stoop low enough to ask us for it. I will match my knowledge of the habits, habitats, husbandry and breeding of the snakes of West Texas against any information the state boys have. Also, my comments on NJ bog turtles stand. He knew a hell of a lot more than anyone working for the state about the populations within NJ.
