Reproducing slowly makes it hard to meet the high demand for them. They are hardy, and pretty easy to care for if you can provide a good outdoor setup for them, so they make good pets for those with the outdoor space. That creates a high demand... keeps their prices up. Wait till the fall and you'll see prices go down, though, when there are a ton of hatchlings that won't be absorbed by demand as quickly and sellers will want to get rid of them still.
