Nothing sanctimonious about it, sorry if you feel that way. I can only go by watching what I see in my animals living outdoors and in larger spaces, and as I mentioned, I cannot talk to them, and use objective means (activity level and health) to make the determination that outdoor living in a large environment is superior. That requires no anthropomorphizing, and is in fact the opposite of doing so.
I consider box turtle housing indoors to be cruel because I've seen the effects of what all but the most elaborate zoo systems has on their health, but notice I specified box turtles, as it is possible to keep other species indoors and relatively healthy for long periods.
I made no suggestion to belittle your husbandry, and indeed have no idea what it is you do. If there is something you do that makes you feel inadequate about your techniques, I'm sorry, but it has nothing to do with my experience or observation. Please do not try to take it that way.
