I am careful not to assume I know wether my animals are "happy" or not, nor wether or not they can even be happy or sad. Besides the activity level (activity that is not stressed, positive things like foraging) I do use the frequency of illnesses or maladies among the herds as part of my definition of successful keeping.
You have very interesting ideas, I'd love to hear more of them, especially about your keeping habits.
(I do agree that some dogs, like my dog, is probably brighter than some people, probably why I spend most of my time with my dogs and herds of turtles)
