A few days ago my son told me that his friend Jason had caught a lizard at school. I wasn't sure whether or not to believe him because in questioning him he told me Jason was carrying it around in his pocket and keeping it in his desk. Kyle assured me however that it was a real LIVE lizard, not some imaginary lizard, plastic lizard, or dead lizard. Still not entirely believing him I told him that he should tell Jason to let it go, that a lizard did not belong in little boys pockets or desks. I should have been a little more firm with this message.
Why???
Because last night upon arriving home my son jumps up and says "Look mom what Jason let me bring home" and proceeds to produce a very small, very dead looking lizard from his pocket. I am not even two feet in the front door and this poor thing is shoved in my face. "Kyle, that lizard is dead". "No mom he is just sleeping". (He proceeds to roll the thing around in his hand.) "KYLE THE LIZARD IS DEAD". At this point I see a little jerk from the tiny, no bigger than my pinky finger, lizard. Whew, not dead, yet!!
I spent the next two hours dealing with this. I put the poor thing in a tank, provided water, sent Kyle out to catch bugs and tore up the tinest pieces of greens. Followed by a long lecture about "How Would You Feel?" and a call to Jason and his parents.
I felt it important that the boys return the lizard to the wild themselves. So I kept it overnight. I took Kyle and the lizard (transported in a more appropriate container than a little boys pocket) to school this morning, met with Jason and his mom and watched the boys set it free.
I am still upset with Kyle. I figured he would have known better. I am still sickened by the fact that he carried this poor thing in his pocket for a couple of hours. He sees all the care I put into Mel. The only reason I don't have him help more with Mel is because of his condition.
Some of you must have human kids. How involved are they with your animal kids?
I know this was long. Thanks for letting me vent. And I have a son that I am willing to let go cheap, will consider trading for an iguana.
