I think you might have misunderstood Kitty. It was not my intention to imply that kids in general were not responsible enough to care for pets.
I was disappointed in how my son handled the situation. I thought he was a bit more responsible than that. I was surprised, especially since Kyle is normally so sensitive of others feelings, at how he treated the lizard. While not being deliberately cruel or malicious he didn't seem aware of how his actions might be affecting the little guy or the danger he was putting him in.
I was also curious as to how much involvement the kids of others have with their pets. Due to a medical condition of Kyle's I have limited his contact with Mel. I am looking for ways to overcome his condtion so that he can be more involved. Hopefully he will build up enough responsibility to have a pet of his own in a year or so.
I should also point out that Kyle is quite a bit younger than you and Paul, who are both teens. He is only nine. I don't think he has quite developed the level of responsibility that you have. I am hoping he will.
Everyone is different. I applaud kids that have pets they take good care of, just as I get angry about adults who abuse the animals in their care.
