Your son is not the only one. A long time ago when my son was about 6 years old he caught a frog and wanted to keep it. We set up a big plastic container with some water and a rock so that it could get out of the water. I was going to let him keep it for a little while and then he could release it. That night my son was sure that I didn't know what I was doing and that the frog needed a lot more water. He filled the container all the way to the top with water and put the lid back on. Needless to say the frog had drowned by morning.

Kids just don't think it all the way through, thats why they are kids. Don't be to hard on your son, I don't think that he realized that he and his friend was actually hurting the lizard. It gets me when its adults who know better do things like that.
