It sounds like an impaction. I have used all types of substrates...calcisand first(which I THOUGHT was good at the time)...then I was using papertowels...even though they didn't look great they got rid of potential impaction worries.
I now use Forrest Bed(it holds moisture which increases humidity too), but all my feeders are fed in a receptacle, so I don't worry about them accidentally eating it. Definately change your substrate (it doesn't hold humidity well either)...especially if your feeders are walking around loose.
