I also do my best to know how to treat as many ailments as possible even though my veterinarian is only half an hour away. HOWEVER, I will not be one to a.) knowingly put an animal's life and/or well being in jeopardy by helping someone that THINKS they know what they're doing play "doctor" simply because they do not have the appropriate resources necessary to adequately care for an animal. I agree with Xta that the vet, even if not familiar with reptiles, would have been able to do an excellent job with the situation simply by consulting with a known herp vet over the phone. Suturing is not a major procedure and should be able to be handled by almost any licensed veterinarian. Or b.) assist someone in quite possibly breaking the law by knowingly giving them the information necessary to perform a potentially harmful/illegal procedure such as the one that Hasim described.
And, fortunately/unfortunately, if I think someone is intentionally doing something that, in my mind, is a stupid move then for better or worse I'm going to tell them that. Sorry. If you came here with a similar issue I would have said the same thing to you, Tiffany. As I said, there ARE certain things that experienced, responsible animal keepers can do to care for their animals. ONE of them is knowing when NOT to play doctor and actually TAKE the animal to a qualified veterinarian. If you do not have the appropriate network in place to properly care for an animal that you assume responsibility for when you bring it into your home, then you have absolutely no business owning that animal regardless of species. And if someone is scared because I tell them on an anonymous message board that I believe they are in need of a "rectal craniotomy" then I can only imagine what they would feel if it were told to them in person. Honest questions are fine, I, for one, have not problem one with answering them. We were all new to something at one point. However, seemingly innocent questions when associated with inappropriate (and possibly illegal) actions aren't something that I can simply answer and let go. I just remembered an ad campaign for a local newspaper - "If you want something sugar coated - go buy a donut."
