Free roaming vs caging.

Okay, I have had Ziggy less than two weeks and I have seen some people talk about free roaming. I have five dogs in right now (and it would be tough to keep an ig on the couch safe) but would like to know what people think about free roaming.

How do you keep things clean if they poop on the carpet or on the furniture? And does Salmonella pose a problem when igs are free roaming? Do igs get along with other pets?
