uh.....from a person who had free roamers....cage em!
Injuries, illness, and disease more common with free roamers. To hard to control temps, humidity.
The risk of salmonella infection heightens because after your ig has gone poopie may drag his butt on sofa or carpet...and you may not even see it! From Maders Reptile book...Salmonella lives 89 days submerged in tap water, 280 days in garden soil ...and even if you try to eliminate Salmonella from your reptile(antibiotics but also creating a resistive strain of Salm.)it can excrete Salmonella for 8 weeks after treatment. Someone at another forum said that Salmonella lives 2 weeks in fabrics...I haven't found anything to verify it. Household pets and childern under 10 most at risk of contracting it from reptiles.
I lecture all my nephews and neices about washing their hands after handling my reptiles everytime there here but Im the one who's had symptoms several times a year! Physician heal thyself! lol
Anyway I think that Melissa's site has articles on it ...as well as on igs getting along with family pets ok!
