First of all, I am a sophmore in h.s., and I am interested in herps more than anything.I was so jealous when I heard that teachers had a number of herps in their rooms, and were actually forming out of school clubs. Well, at conferences last night, my parents talked to my science teacher, and I heard the best thing I've heard in a long time. He asked for a grant to get all different species of reptiles and amphibians to go into his classroom, teach the students how to take care of them and handle them during the year, and HAVE THE KIDS TAKE THEM HOME AND TAKE CARE OF THEM IN THE SUMMER! He wanted, I think, 40 different species, and would handpick students to care for them in summer. Unfortunately, they wouldn't give him the grant. The school has to understand that the absolute best, and, for some, only way to learn is to use actual live organisms. I understand they have a lot of requests, and it costs a lot of money, but it is an extremely important issue. Today I talked to him for about an hour straight about this, and, man, he had the perfect plan...so much stuff. He would have a chairman, and after talking to him, he found out how much I actually knew about this stuff, I'd have a pretty good chance. He's not known to be a happy-go-lucky guy, but he was pretty damn happy after we talked. He's the type that's sort of in their own world with his own personal interests, which is herps for him, that when he talks about the interests, he's totally there all the way... Leopard Geckos, Jacksons Chameleons, Blue-Tongued Skinks, etc... I told him about how I'm getting into breeding Leopard Geckos, and that I have 6 at home, and that I could bring a sub-adult to school in a 10 gallon setup. That is going to happen in two weeks, and there were some kids who joined the conversation towards the end that wanted to clean up, get tanks, and some animals. They will allow animals in there, as long as he recieves/buys/gets them himself, and it would be pretty expensive. We all decided to come in certain days after school and clean up, set up terrariums.tanks, etc... chip in for herps/supplies, and slowly make it happen...starting with only like 3 herps, and work our way up, and catch wild herps for it in spring. What I was wondering is if any of you have herps in school where you handle them, and learn to care for them. I also found out there are places that will pay you in the summer to catch wild animals to study(community colleges, etc...), has anyone heard of that? Teachers out there who get herps in the room, I hate school, but I love you...anyone have comments on this subject? How do you get a school to buy herps?
