Ester,
I wish you all the best. Where I am kids grow up with anoles and gators in their backyards. I however grew up in Pittburgh and was simply fascinated by virtually any reptile. In NYC anoles would go over well, have you thought about bearded dragons which may be the ultimate classroom "pet".
