I hesitate to post this picture, because the yellow has faded and become suffused with brown after a year, and is nothing like the yellow on your mandarin, I'm sure, Walt. And pictures also lose a lot of their brightness when put on the web. But the percent of light ground color on this individual is high compared to other dione. You might see where the reddish-brown blotches could connect to become stripes, and the light ground color could take over. Ordinarily, the light color would be the dorsal stripe.
What I was suggesting with your mandarin, is that the yellow may be spreading beyond it's dorsal containment in the blotches, to the extent that it's taking over the ground color. You've seen some evidence in several individuals, then one speciman had the yellow so extensive, that the (more neutral) ground just disappeared. Could there be some mechanism at work there? I think there could. Maybe it's a mutation and genetic. TC.
