We have black rats here in KY that dont attain a true black color and maintain much of their pattern. Here is a picture of my black rat, he is a WC '01 and a little over a year and a half old. Most black rats will retain some pattern, with the exception of the snakes from the eastern states or from southeastern Missouri where I grew up. Post some pics of yours

Black rat snakes are pretty variable when it comes to coloration, and it is very hard to judge the color of one as a hatchling/yearling.
The coloration can be from dark grey to an olive coloration to solid black. Mine even has some dark golden coloration to him!! That is why I like the black rats so well, is the coloration of these beauties and their personalities are usually pretty chill.
