First of all, let me start by saying that I agree with what BabyHerp and Confused stated in posts below. If someone wants to bring an ig into their lives, I'm all for it! Lords knows we love and enjoy our's more each day. Yes, the prospective owner should read up on igs PRIOR to obtaining one. We did and it probably saved us a lot of heartache. Morgan has the support of her friend Kitty and she also has US to guide her. Yes, she needs to find a good reptile vet first too.
After seeing igs being sold between $4 and $5 at yesterday reptile show, Jeff and I were disgusted! Believe me, there was a lot of people at that show who were there just to "look" (first time people). How attractive a $4 ig is and look! Its so small (impluse buying)! Had we not had our NIAD t-shirts on, I would have played the "dumb" customer and asked the "how big will it get and what do you feed them questions, etc."
Jeff and I volunteer with a local reptile rescue group and Traci, who posts here from time to time can verify this, the MAJORITY of the rescued animals are IGUANAS. From people who don't know what to do with them now that they are getting big. A lot of them had poor diets, little or no UVB lighting, etc.
Instead of breeding igs, because we all know there is a surplus of them out there, I would recommend eveyone adopt an unwanted ig from a local rescue group when you want to obtain one. Sorry Dino, I do not mean to offend you, but what we have seen ourselves and have heard from other rescue groups, there are too many igs out there now to be breeding them ourselves.
My family has always been involed in some type of animal rescue (usually dogs and cats). Haven't each of us been disgusted by someone who has a dog and cat and "just feels that Fluffy or FiFi should have a litter (pups or kittens)". No, I DON'T think so! Go visit your local animal shelter first! Look at all of those cats/dogs that will be put down. Same goes for the igs. How many at the local pet store will die (either at the store or in the hands of new and uninformed new owners)? In regards to iguanas, contact your local rescue group FIRST. Please please do NOT BREED YOUR IGS!
Thank you, I feel much better now.
Sue (and my name is probably Mud with some now)
