In Reply to: Aquiring an Iguana.....On my Soapbox posted by Lola and Harry's Mom on May 10, 1999 at 05:47:45:
I don't have an iguana, let me just say that now.
And I won't have one until I am financially stable
and have plenty of room (being in college, living
in an apartment, just doesn't cut it). Anyway,
I may not have an iguana, but I do have experience
with rescue. Iguanas, ferrets, dogs, etc. There
are so many homeless iguanas out there now it is
just ridiculous. Those iguanas may be from an
"iguana farm" or they could be from a responsible
breeder. Those responsible breeders cannot control
what happens after the ig leaves their home.
Unless you force someone to read Hatfield's
entire 600+ page book or Kaplan's entire web info,
and then take a comprehensive test on it, the
breeders cannot tell if the new owner is truly
(truly!) prepared for iguana ownership. Not even
then, really. Those new owners may end up using
that ig to breed later, and maybe not responsibly,
and the cycle continues. Or just get rid of it
because it was more expensive or got too big, too
fast than originally thought. Is the breeder
willing (or insistent) to take all igs back that
it had originally sold? That would be a lot of
iguanas. No matter how responsible, how much the
breeder loves his/her iguanas, they cannot control
what happens to the babies later.
Education is the only key to solve this problem.
Education on proper iguana care and on where they
should get their igs in the first place.
If you don't rescue, don't breed.
Until there are none, adopt one.
On my soapbox and stickin' to it...
