This is my first time writing to this forum, but I wholeheartedly agree with all of you. My eyes water every time I go into a pet store or private residence where reptiles are kept in horrid conditions. My last iguana "Salvador"(still mourned to this day) was a handsome 5 foot sweetie-- I would take him to the park, kindergarden classes etc. Everyone loved him, but many people did not realize it was an iguana because they are so seldom seen at their prime & the statement I heard most often was, "I used to have one, but it died" That statement started to make me ill. I would always educate people on a proper diet & many times steer people away from getting one. Too many people see it as a novelty pet & think it will be a cute pet for their kids. Clearly from all of my scratches & scars dealing with a tame 10 lb iguana, a child could not handle this pet without significant help from a parent. All one can do is educate, I suppose & I try to do that whenever possible. My only sadness is that my new male
iguana who was a little older than the normal pet store iggies, is beautiful, but not nearly as sweet as my last one. I hate to compare, but it sure hurts to lose a great one! I felt like my first borne died the day he passed away in my arms (I don't have kids yet so it's the closest experience I have). Anyway, I'm glad to see there are so many caring iguana owners out there.
