Thinking of getting an iguana......

For my boyfriend, (yes, he knows, this is not something I would suprise him with)
I was a little worried about what I read about their temper during breeding time. Do only the males get angry?
And when I went on a adoption forum they talked about some of theirs being altered. If you alter your iguana does it stop the potential ugliness of their personality coming out?
I have no plans on breeding, just a pet.
I like the idea of adoption, but perhaps maybe for a smaller one so they can get to know eachother
