I am sure it slipped Chris H.'s mind to mention that hognoses commonly go through a winter lethargy (despite summer like light cycles and temps) where they do not eat. Search through this forum to see just how common it is.
I think Westerns are great snakes (stick with captive bred), but I only recommend them to people who have had snakes before and think they have an understanding of reptilian/snake behavior. Hognoses are drastically different animals, and it takes some experience to decipher their behavior and understand them, all to take care of them better.
