Tuesday night my 3yr old iguana Syd started shaking his head uncontrollably and was having muscle spasms in his arms and legs. He couldn't walk forward and was VERY lethargic. We took him to the vet first thing wed morning. Diagnosis was severe calcium deficioncy (sp?), so low it didn't even register. I feel so bad but I can't understand this. We dust his food 2-3 times a week with supliments (nekton-rep). We give him Kale, mustard greens, collard greens, bell peppers, ocasional tofu and strawberries, and various other veggies. We try to varie what he gets. He has free roam of a room with a basking area (he hated his cage). He goes outside for UVB at least 3x a week and gets soaked at least 1x a week. We also mist him daily and he has a water bowl he drinks out of. In the past couple months he hasn't been eating nearly as much. He also went orange (coloring) for awhile but I dint' worry about this because someone told me that when they turn orange and lose their appitite it is breeding season. My vet told me yesterday that breeding season is in the fall so I guess that was wrong. I feel so bad. Please tell me what we were doing wrong. And be blunt if you have to. We have a younger ig.. Nancy and I don't want this to happen to her.
Syd is at the vet now. They gave him calcium shots yesterday and will give more today. He ate a little today which is good because if he didn't they were going to put a feeding tube in him. We are having tests run to see if he has any kidney damage. He is still tremoring but not as much. They hadn't seen any violent seizures like tues eve. He is also walking a little. He isn't out of the woods yet.. not by a long shot but hopefully (cross your fingers) he pulls through.
Please tell me what you noticed that we did wrong. Vet said we need to soak him more and get him outside more. We are going to change his basking area to a quieter room in the house that will be more "Syd's area". I will also trash the Nekton-rep and give him what I give my Beardies (rep-cal & the vitamins made by the same company). Any advice is greatly apriciated. Hopefully Syd will be coming home today. It's so sad without him here. :(

Christina
