We live in central Fla and our igs free roam also.We don't recommend this,but we don't use UVB lites since I don't work days and our kids go outside everyday for at least 3-5hrs of sunshine a day and the humidity here is unbelievably high.
We haven't had any problems in 10yrs with our herps.
Our males orange times come twice a yr also and he doesn't eat as much during this time.I don't think you were wrong in thinking that was one of your problems.Infections take soooo long to show up in reptiles and it takes sooo long for meds to show good effects.I'm glad you took your Syd to the vet right away.Knowing the little actions of our kids can make a big difference in getting something wrong treated right away.Good job on your part,so don't feel so bad.
The reserch on reptiles is ever changing and it's our jobs as parents to read read read.So you're doing a good job.
