An unfortunate thing. My personal opinion is that Pet Stores sometimes just don't care for the animals on purpose so a couple suckers come in, feel bad for the citter and buy it. Can't prove that though....
Rule number one: HE EATS GREENS!!! NO ANIMAL PROTEIN! Greens include (But are not limited to) Dandelions, Collard, Mustard, Watercress, Endive, Escrole, and turnip Greens. Also use Veggies such as Green Beans, Zucchini, carrots, snap peas, mushrooms, BUTTERNUT SQUASH! (excellent staple veggie), eggplant, bell peppers, etc. And also a LITTLE!!! friut such as peaches, apple, pear, figs, watermelon, cataloupe, honeydew, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, grapes, etc. All these things should be sherded, crush, chunked, mashed, pealed or mushed so the Ig won't get impacted and they can easily eat it. Igs will NOT or eat so give him as much as he wants.
Rule Number two: GET HIM OUT OF THAT TANK!!!! If cared for properly (diet, lighting, humidity, etc.) they will grow VERY quickly. You'll be lucky if a ten gallon tank lasts a month! A cage a LEAST! 6 ft tall, 5 feet wide, and 4 ft deep will due for a adult Ig. But that's the BARE MINIMUN! (please pardon my spelling).
Rule number three: UV LIGHTS are a MUST!!! My Ig has two kinds of lights, a Floresant UVB and two Dayglo UV blubs. I'm still a Newbie to Igs so I'm still slightly confused about the whole light situation so hopefully someone else can help on that.
Also, Humidity about 50 to 70 % ( at least that's in My Ig's cage) Is a must for shedding. Probably higher is better and Temps should be about 80of at night and between 90 and 100 during daytime. ( IF I'M WRONG CORRECT ME PLEASE!!!!!!)
You can find a LOT of good care sheets online. One I found fantastic was at the Green Iguana Socity. Everything you ever wanted to know and then some is found there. Also get the Book "Iguanas For Dummies". Again, a must have for Ig owners.
I know I'm forgeting a 100 and 1 things but that should at least get you started. OTHER PEOPLE PLEASE HELP THIS PERSON!! I know I'm probably only half right on the temps and humidity but Definatly Check out www.greeniguanasocity.com (I think that's the page). It's still helping me a LOT! Also stick around here and read all the posts you can. It's time to cram for the sake of your cutie. Hope this helps. And PLEASE double check EVERYTHING I told you. Like I said, I'm still very new myself.
Have Fun with your new friend! :)
:Alright... I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about Iguanas.
:You may ask yourself why, then, do I currently have one in a small tank on my bookshelf... but I DO have an answer to that.
:I have wanted an iguana forever. I KNOW they get very large, because I did know people who own them...
:But I know nothing else about them, and the pet store (not surprisingly) was NOT helpful at all.
:I bought the poor little thing -- affectionately named Gir -- from a store that... well, wasn't taking care of him in any humane manner. Will someone PLEASE help me out? I need a sort of... mentor/advisor/suggester type person. I'm NOT giving him up. I bought him to save him, and he's MINE... at least I think it's a he... they said, at least partially truthfully, I gather, that it's near impossible to tell when they're very young. The pet store owner didn't even know how old they were... only about 'a couple months old'. So...
:Someone HELP ME!
