See but here is something I truely believe. I think when people get iguanas most of the time there is little research involved and so nothing is done for uvb, but also there is poor butrition and poor housing. On the other hand those of us that do research find out that they need uvb and that they need large cages or rooms, and that they have very complex dietary needs. See when I first started igs over 10 years ago, I was a young kid and didn't know any better, but I was also a smart kid and started doing research. Well being a kid I didn't have tons of money. The cage part was easy because I was given a cage for free that was great. On the other hand I couldn't afford the uvb, and tried getting my igs outside as much as possible. Well as time went on I never once have had any of my reptiles get MBD, plus I have actually turned around an ig that the vet gave me only a month with. He went on to live to be about 6 years old, I got him when he was 4, but the years of living off of one head of lettuce a week was to much. I would also like to comment that about a year ago I took a 2 year old ig that was kept under a uvb bulb, but she was small. Long story short she constantly found ways to escape my cages I offered, so I gave her to a friend that has a 12 foot by 20 foot room for his lizards to roam. He has plenty of heat lights and one fixture with flourescent bulbs that are the cheap kind from Wal-mart that he uses just for more room light. She is no gravid, has grown almost a foot, and doing great. All this was done without uvb, but instead with proper diet and care. Yesterday I took in another yearling, who seems to be showing early sings of calcium deficiency due to the puffing of his back legs, I will be sure to keep all who doubt me informed. Honestly If I do fail and my way of working is wrong, I am the kind of person that wants to learn that, but as of now my personal experiences have not shown such results, and I am faithful they wont.
