Currently I own a yearling male(?) and a 3 year old female. The male was just acquired yesterday, where as the female I got about a year ago, she was abused and fed beans as a diet. She has since grwon about 2 inches or so bu gained much girth. I am realistic in think she will not grow much larger then she is since she has a SVL of about 20 inches, with only half a tail. In the past I have owned quite a few igs, 3 of which I have adopted out, Iggy my favorite of all time lived to be around 9, I got him when he was about 4 and had been kept in a 40gal tank all his life he was 2.5 feet with tail then and grew to around 4 feet, Tex came to me when he was about 7, and lived with me for 2 years, another godzilla, was given to me when he was just over 4, he was fed only a head of lettuce a week by his owners, the vet gave me about a month with him, he lived for over 2 years with me, but his body fnaly began to shut down on him, I actually bought one adult female once named tequila, she was very fond of her previous female owner and never really took to me, she was 9 when I got her and she lived to be 12, the worst iguanas I ever got though, I recieved from a guy who was going away to college and thought he wouldn't have the time any more for them, needless to say I don't think he gave them much time before this. The were housed together in a 65gal reptarium, with a heat light and a Reptisun 5.0. When I showed up to get them one would run every where and the other just kinda layed there. They were so skinny you could see bones running down the tail. Mom toled me he had them for almost 2 years, which was scary because they were about6 inches SVL. I almost told them there was no way i was going to take them, but I gave in. The worse of the two lived only a month with me, drinking very little and eating less, the other lived for a couple of months, but the vet even considered putting her down just to save pain. See I am not the kinda guy that goes out every year and buys a new one, instead I take in those that need homes, out of the many I have had I would say only 3 were healthy when I got them, one being Tequila, and two that I adopted out. What I do does seem very impractical to many, but still I am contending proper care can be given with simply natural lighting when available. I guess if I lived in Alaska I would buy UVB bulbs.
