that your ig could have rubbed his nose raw and what you are seeing/feeling could be dried blood? The coloration you describe is the reason that I suggest this. Otherwise I would have thought that it would simply be a case of shedding but scales about to be shed usually turn a gray/grayish blue color. Any chance that you can get us pictures of the condition at all?
If there is no possiblilty of cuts/abrasions anywhere I would suggest that a vet appointment is warranted..... If you need to locate one try checking at the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians website - www.arav.org under the "members" section.
