Fair to whom? While I realize she may not be trying to cause anymore problems, I feel that if someone feels strong enough in their convictions to bring up an issue then they should afford others the opportunity to express their feelings and opinions on the subject as well. I am new to the Kingsnake board but not by any means new to keeping iguanas or the internet -I have only recently begun sharing in communities such as these. Was the post directed at me? How can I know? And, if I was the person who has so obviously offended Xta's sensibilities then I should be afforded the opportunity to decide whether or not an apology should be offered.
I can't and won't speak for anyone else but when I post, the same as when I speak, I do not pull any punches, I am always straight forward and honest. I'm sorry if anyone feels that
my command of the English language comes across as being condescending and pompous but I refuse to dumb myself down to appease anyone. I do not believethat the Internet gives anyone an excuse to act like an vent, even though any
fool with a computer can and usually does take advantage of being able to
hide behind a monitor, yards of phone line and an anonymous screen name and
spout garbage. I am not going to apologize to anyone for having the good sense God gave me, nor should anyone have to.
I feel very strongly about certain issues that come up on this board - and it is my understanding that the point of forums such as this is the free and open exchange of ideas and opinions. I make it a practice to not hand out medical advice in any forum for specific reasons. My standard
answer is to "contact your vet" or if the person has expressed that they are
trying a certain method I say, "this is what we have done ... but I still
recommend that you contact a qualified vet and discuss your options with
him/her because they will be better able to find the best solution for you
and your animal". The same information is posted on our Internet site -we practice what we preach in every forum we participate in. The main reasons I do not hand out medical advice is that any time you
hand out medical advice it puts you in a precarious situation at best and
can lead to a lawsuit if the person really wants to take it that far in the
event that the advice given and taken leads to a bad end. Furthermore, it is
one thing when there are a few people discussing assorted care methods in a
thread and another story altogether when someone comes to the board with a
broken back, sick iguana, or other such scenario looking for easy answers and quick fixes.
All of this really comes down to one issue ... People's perceptions of how they think things should be and how other people should behave. The tone of a post is all about
perception if you really think about it. I read a post about someone who
has a sick iguana, has already posted
several times and been told by many to go to a vet and yet has no intention
of following the advice they asked for and taking it to the vet and think
"what a fool" while someone else may read that same post and think "oh how
sad, this person needs help". I read a post where someone makes a clever
Freudian comment and think "roflmao -that is too funny" and someone else
reads that same post and thinks "what kind of vent is this person". It takes
all kinds to make the world, whether IRT or on the Internet, an interesting
place. While some may have the patience of a saint, I do not (for which I am envious
because there are
often times I wish I did in both my personal and professional life.) I am
straight forward and no punches pulled honest. My friend Suzanne is boisterous and
often times downright insane. We have friends that are bikers, even one with
a PhD, and lawyers and bankers and janitors......each one as unique and full of quirks as the next. We are all part of the
cloth that makes life colorful -none of us should ever have to apologize for
who we are and I for one will never do so.
What I have noticed on many forums,
even on the recipe forum I participate on, is that any time new people come
in with original thoughts and ideas someone is inevitably and unecessarily put off by this new dynamic in the group. I am not saying this is the case,
nor am I pointing fingers at individuals, I'm just making an observation. I ask just as many
questions as I answer, the difference being is that I am always prepared to hear an answer that I might not like or agree with. I always tell people and
find myself saying more and more frequently, don't ask a question unless you
are prepared to hear an answer you may not like. There is a different
between ignorant and uninformed. The ignorant person will repeatedly ask the
same question and disregard every answer until they hear one that agrees
with the decision they made in their minds before they even hit the post
button. The uninformed person asks a question with no expectation of what
the answer may be and have every intention of following the advice they get
to the best of their abilities. I'm sorry but I am not willing to put
the life of any of my beloveds in the hands of an amateur no matter how well
intentioned they may be but if someone else would like to, far be it from me
to deny them. Also, I can't in all good faith sit here and allow anyone to
penalize anyone else because they feel strongly that common
sense should be dispensed in good doses to people who seem to lack
any of their own.
Ofcourse, all of this is just my opinion and I am sure that there are going to be people who not only don't agree with me but will downright rip me apart for sharing it. I left another forum because the only opinion I was allowed to have was the one that agreed with the people who ran it -I hope that is not the case here. I also think that the person who asks the question should be held accountable to be enough of an adult to participate in a free exchange of thoughts and ideas without getting their feathers too ruffled.
