I just found this site the other day, and I must say that I have found a wealth of info.
My ig (Ziggy) has been having a bout of constipation. Ziggy did not poop for about 7-10 days so I gave him a bath the day before yesterday. It came out as soon as he/she hit the water. Ziggy did not go today. It's usually has a movement every one to three days ( during the past couple winter months it's been more like 3-5). I am prity sure(99%) the reason for his constipation is because I the cage is not as warm as it should, it is about 85-95 in his basking spot and low to mid 70's in the rest of the cage. The cage is wire mesh, Ziggy lives in Tx's so it was naturally heated during the summer (house temp hi 70's low 80's), but during this winter the house has been heated in the low 70's. The cage heating situation is like this I have a hot air humidifier underneath the lounging pad (2ft offset) that puts off steam that is around 80 deg when it gets to him, also I have a small hot rock that he is usually laying on ( don't yell at me I have it covered in a old sock and a towel, to keep the temp down to mid 80's). A basking lamp and a 3ft florecent light both on a day timer (1.5ft to 2ft offset). Ziggy has been eating every day, has good tone, and a nice round belly.
I read Kaplan web page on consitpation, and she mentioned that organ failure could ocure if this problem is not corrected. Should I have Zig checked out by a vet?
I am in the process of building Ziggy a brand new enclosed cage out of plexy glass. Up until this winter I had been living in a apt so it wasn't that bad to keep the place in the high to low 70 during the winter. But now that I am living in a house, it's not that cheap, and the poor little guy is suffering because of my neglect.
I got Ziggy in '98 at petsmart. I was in collage and I thought that an ig would be an easy pet to care for (What the heck as I thinking). When I got Ziggy he was the width of my thumb and was 4 inches long. I picked Ziggy because there was a million igs in the cage, all of them were piled on top of each other by the heating light. Except for Ziggy, who was sitting all by his lonesome in the corner. It's now two years 49" ( he is about 52" snout to tail) and 2.5-3lbs later.
Until I get him in his new home, any advice on heating his current enlosure ( like a ceramic heat emiter? and daily baths to get the poop out)
