My 6 1/2 year old male Q is in pretty dire straits right now.
He's been to his regular vet twice and an emergency vet twice in
the last three days. This time his troubles aren't centered in
his damaged kidneys but are the result of the overall stress on
his system. Q's vet left instructions on what to do, but she's
in New York for the next four days and I have some questions
with no one to answer them!
Q has an infection, possibly in his liver (white count at 21,000)
and widespread edema. Q is on injectible Lasix, oral Baytri and
Flagyl in addition to his normal Alternagel and Calciquid. Q is
very weak and is regurgitating liquid from his mouth and nose.
While there doesn't seem to be liquid IN his lungs, xrays showed
significant fluid around his lungs. His breathing is very slow.
Even though Q seems to be full of liquid, I'm supposed to continue
his 30-40 ccs of oral water a day. This is very difficult. If I
tip Q forward, fluid literally runs out of his mouth and nose!
Unfortunately, Q isn't defecating this liquid and he seems very
bloated (but this may be edema).
I remember reading that iZ's Mom had to aspirate liquid out of
iZ and them replace it with a Pedialyte/water mix. I'm wondering
if I need to do something similar, or if anyone has any other
suggestions how to help Q.
Here are some specific questions:
Should I purposely hold Q at an angle to drain some of this
liquid? If so, how often? Just before giving him meds and
liquid, or at periodic intervals?
Anyone have any ideas on how to get Q to pass some of this fluid?
The normal poop-inducing tricks aren't working.
I'm trying to get a little bit of food into him. I'm using
strawberry-flavored Ensure. Should I try something more solid?
With the Baytril and Flagyl, I'm worried about gut flora. Should
I dose him with yogurt or should I hold off on this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
