In Reply to: iZ's Mom? Other igsperts? Q's in trouble! (long) posted by T and Q on April 21, 2000 at 09:36:27:
oh of all the days, i picked today to be off-line for most of the day! ARG!
i'm wondering if Q's throat isn't too swollen to swallow + that's why the liquids are running out??? i don't know anything about igs regurgitating ... but it coming out of his nose makes me wonder about his ability to swallow ... if that's the case you might want to try to tube feed him directly into his tummy ... (e-mail me)
from the sounds of things, i don't think it's necessarily coming from his stomach, so there's no way you could aspirate it out ...
Should I purposely hold Q at an angle to drain some of this liquid? If so, how often? Just before giving him meds and liquid, or at periodic intervals?
i'd at least do it before *and* after giving him anything by mouth ... and it sure couldn't hurt to try it in between those times, just to see if anything *will* drain out ... i don't think that igs can cough (????)... if they can't, then tipping the front half of his body downwards would be about the only way to help drain anything that he may have aspirated into his lungs ... (+ maybe thump on his chest while you're doing it to help move anything that may be in there ... )
it *is* very good that his lungs themselves appeared to be clear on the x-rays! his breathing is most likely labored because of the fluid surrounding them, putting more pressure on the lungs themselves ...
Anyone have any ideas on how to get Q to pass some of this fluid?
the lasix should help *alot* with that (it removes excess fluids from the body by making you pee) ... try warm water tub soaks 2-3 times a day to encourage him to pee ... (+ try Morgan's massage technique)
and keep up with some pedialyte, cuz the more he drinks the more of the extra fluids he'll actually pass ...
The normal poop-inducing tricks aren't working.
Dr. Frye recommended Milk of Magnesium for iZ when he was severely constipated ... can't remember the dose offhand ... will look it up if you need it ...
I'm trying to get a little bit of food into him. I'm using strawberry-flavored Ensure. Should I try something more solid?
as stressed as his system is right now, a liquid diet is probably the best way to go ... it'll take less energy to digest than anything solid would ... i wouldn't worry about solids right now ...
i wouldn't worry about the gut flora right away but if he *likes* yogurt and will willingly eat some, i'd give it to him just to get some more calories in him ...
i think Morgan made a good point in that the extra attention is prob'ly adding some more stress on him ... (i know it did when iZ was in 'intensive care'!) ... try to leave him alone as much as possible, try not to let the medication/tub/etc sessions take too long ... tho i know with iZ, i wished i could just hold him all day, Q just won't appreciate it right now ... even attention every 4-6 hrs felt like alot to him ... the *darkness* part sounds good too! turn his lights off + darken his room so he'll sleep/relax a bit ... and HD made a good point about increasing his heat too! would also increase the humidity if possible for now ...
Morgan makes a good point about all the meds he's on ... but without being able to consult with a good vet, i'm not sure what, if anything i'd drop for now ... i've seen Aluminum Hydroxide (Alternajel) make such a *huge* difference in a very short amount of time in iZ and i sure wouldn't cut it out right now ... if it is Q's kidneys, the Alternagel will help with that (which will help his ability to pee/poop) ...
i'm gonna post this now ... i'm sure i'll think of something to add later ...
hang in there! am sending lots of hugs to you and Q to get thru this ok!!! + iZ sends worried headbobs ....
keep us posted!!!!!!
