Lasix is a potent diuretic and can lead to depletion of potassium as well as electrolytes and blood calcium levels ...
Lasix may promote diuresis (increased urine output) in cases which have previously proved resistant to other diuretics. ... it has no significant pharmacological effects other than on renal function. ...
Non-oral use is indicated when a rapid onset and an intense diuresis is desired e.g., acute pulmonary edema (what Q has) ... also indicated when oral therapy is precluded because of interference with intestinal absorption or for other reasons. (possibly antibiotics +/or his other meds)...
.... Following i.v. administration of the drug, the diuresis occurs within 30 minutes and the duration of action is about 2 hours. ...
Indications: The treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and renal disease .....
Contraindications: Complete renal shutdown. If increasing oliguria (little to no urine output) occurs during treatment of severe progressive renal disease, the drug should be discontinued.

and yes indeed, igs can be on prednisone! i think Q has been on steroids in the past for swelling of this throat ... can't remember for sure ...
