Boxies require a lot of space for their size, and plenty of things to block up the site lines. They are extremely active in evenings and mornings when in proper housing, which MUST ALWAYS be outdoors. They can tolerate short terms indoors, such as winters that are too harsh for hibernation (though a starter hibernation in late fall and then indoor warmup will give them a short, useful and healthy hibernation).
Boxies are very sensitive to light cycles, rainfall (with it on occasion they do so much better, without it they become like rocks), and all the natural elements that are virtually impossible to have indoors unless you own your own private indoor forest.
Any anecdotal stories of boxies surviving indoors are always short term. Some can live as long as 2 years or slightly more before they wither from indoor life, some only make it a few weeks. Captive breds seem to tolerate it better, I start my hatchlings this way until the next spring when they move outdoors.
