My husband, when we first got baby Chanel, regarded Chanel as an interesting novelty pet. It took about 6 months for that to change into Chanel being thought of as our "baby." He loves these turtles and nothing to help/improve their lives seems unreasonable. If baby Chanel needed vet care, the sky was the limit; if he needed equipment, there was no debating price. "Baby" Chanel (and his buddy, Albrecht) have now been our babies for over 5 years and are past the "oh isn't he tiny and adorable" hatchling stage - these guys are now HUGE (25lbs) and strong-willed and scare people easily. They poop BIG TIME (think adult doberman-sized), and are no longer a tiny novelty that people coo over in public. It is hard to listen to the opinions of other people who haven't had their lives vastly charmed by these gentle, intelligent and fun animals.
In fact, it has been suggested multiple times from multiple sources that we "give up" Chanel and Albrecht for Thomas-related germ reasons (Thomas is our newborn infant who has been very sick). This infuriates us and breaks our hearts that people can be so far from understanding the future we have planned together, for over five years, that heavily featured Chanel and Albrecht and our human children growing up together. Of course, these suggestions always come from people who don't have turtles, but still. . . .
Sorry. Just had to vent. If another person tells me to give them to the local zoo and I have to explain that that is NOT an option, I'll end up seeming very un-gracious. I know you understand
