that's what I asked myself, too. McDowell (1975) lumped them together and even Kluge (1992) didn't serperate them...
Well Ray Hoser did the job in 2000 and made him a seperate species. The golden and the brown one should be subsp. nov.
As I understand the new taxa do not agree with the ICZN rules so that the do not seem to be valid or at least need to be discussed. Most of the information given be Ray are taken from McDowell anyway.

But I guess someone else will have a closer look at the Leiopython "complex" soon and will come up with new taxa on them.

: as it's obvious to even a lay person that they are different
