Beautiful snakes! Dang shame they're so rambunctiious. In our area, southern's are the common black racer. As you go to the eastern third of the state you start finding northerns. Oddly enough, on the surface they are nearly identicle. In order to differentiate between the two, you would have to examine the internal aspects of the snake (the hemipenes is different in the two). I couldn't really see a difference in the racers I have seen in the eastern part of the state, simply relying that the field guide was giving correct information of their range.
Had me wondering there Brian, one of my goals is to see every species of snake that lives in Ky in the field, thought maybe I had to add another species to find LOL!
