Well here's my take. I think all the racers found in our area are southern blacks. I think when you start getting to an area around Daniel Boone NP, and east we have northerns. Remember, on the outside, northerns and southern are essentially identicle. I do not believe that the blue racer (foxi) occurs in the state. What makes it confusing is there is some individual differences in shading from one specimen to the next. This is to be expected (milks and hognose are even better examples of this!). Something else, a racer seen while in a shed phase will often appear to be gray, or even blue as the old skin prepares to be slougthed off.
BTW, I know of a place in Hardin county where an absolutelly huge racer lives. I see him a couple of times every year, but haven't photographed him yet. He doesn't want to cooperate..hehe! Next year, I hope to temporarily restrain this brute for some meausurements and pics. This guy's 6' and big around as a beer bottle!
Would you mind going with me and restraining him while I take some pics! LOL!
