Trinket snakes make good captives and stay fairly small. I'm wondering why you are choosing to go with this species as opposed to a corn snake. Corns seems to tame a little better are generally more colorful but to each their own. I used to breed trinkets and my females were typically larger than the males. Females did get into the 3-4 foot range while the males stayed 2-3 feet in length. This may be your difference in lengths you have heard. Trinkets have the ability to breed successfully year round if they are maintained well. As far as you fear of snakes if concerned you will just need to slowly acclimate. Don't force yourself but realize that any dog or cat has the same if not more ability to bite with more damage. Hope this helps a little.
