Michelle, it's good to hear that you are doing your research before buying. Too often people buy 'disposable' pets and guess who gets the raw deal in the end - the animal. In repsonse to your size concern. As mentioned in the other post, corns CAN reach 6 foot in length but this is rare. The typical length is 3.5-4.5 feet. Length depends on how often and how much you decide to feed. I would recommend a yearling if you can find one that way the animals wil have been started off a little. Babies corns are super easy to rear but they can be small like the size of an earth worm and they are a little more delicate. It seems that cost is also a concern. I would suggest buying from a local breeder than a pet store. When I was breeding corns I was selling them for $10-30 depending on the color morph. Maybe we can find a local breeder if you share what city/state you live in. If you take this route your son may be able to save some $$$ and buy a good escape-proof tank/cage and have some money left over to buy food/mice. It's good to have a good realistic experience up front with your first snake so everyone can enjoy the experience and grow. I started slow and have had the luck of breeding some very cool animals in my years. Have fun and good luck! Let us know if you have any other questions.
