Carl couldn't have been more right! I have been herp hunting many times in my three years. It has produced the following:
0.1.3 4' black racers
~ 0.1.14 northern water snakes
0.0.2 redbelly snakes
1.1 gorgeous and large garters (very friendly btw)
0.0.2 worm snakes
0.0.1 ribbon snake
tmtc redbelly and eastern painters
tmtc stinkpots (by far, the most encountered reptile)
several snappers
~10 box turts mostly dor
tmtc bull and green frogs
tmtc southern leopards (no northerns ANYWEHRE in NJ)
tmtc bufo fowleri
1 spadefoot toad
spring peeper, pine barrens treefrog calls every spring
several carpenter frogs
~10 red salamanders
~10 2 lined salamanders
~ 15 fence lizards
This is a fair # of spp, but I am mainly a snake guy. I have been very dissappointed by not coming across any pines, kings, or hognose on my own. I have hunted mainly lowland areas on the pines, but the latter two supposedly favor that habitat. If anyone knows any hotspots for hognose in the barrens, I would love to find out!
i will try and get some nice shots of my catch and habitat!
