He was not attacking your boat. Snakes don't do this. It is an old wives tail (BTW- neither do sharks).
The snake was swimming along and found some structure to crawl up on and bask - that's it. It thought it had found some sort of log to bask on, nothing more exciting than that I'm afraid.
The snake doesn't have enough gray matter to know that
a. it was a boat
b. that it had humas in it.
The snake would have been some kind of Northern or Banded Watersnake, depending on where you lived. It was completely harmless.
