Water Snake

My sister and I was fishing in a lake in SE Alabama Saturday and was approached by a snake. I think he was attacking our boat. I am trying to find out what kink of snake it was. It was not large around, it was long. The color was orange with red rings around it. I was just wondering why did he attach the boat and was he dangerous. He was climbing up on the motor of the boat.
