tame tegu

i purchased b&w a tegu from bert about two weeks ago, hes about 18 in. long. he hasnt really taken a like to fruits yet which doesnt bother me really, but he won't eat out of his bowl he just walks by the food and pays no attention to it. however when i put the food on his basking spot he eats it up. should i continue to feed from the bowl or just put food on his basking spot. another thing i was wondering when i should start taming him down. he's very nervous when im around ill sit in front of his cage to try and calm him down. should i pick him up against his will or should i wait till hes a little more bigger.
