hatchling feeding

Last year I obtained some coachwhip hatchlings. I was unable to get them to feed, and after several weeks, was forced to release them(they were native) to fend for themselves.What do hatchlings eat? What might I have done?I've had adults before and had no problems.What can I do in the future to prevent this from occuring?
