Still experiencing spike problems....

I pulled another spike off again today after a long soak in the bathtub. Again it is soft at the tip, almost like a blood vessel. He has about 15 spikes ready to come off, but I'm afraid to take anymore off because of this. The tip of the last one that came off ended up drying out and shriveling up a bit. It looks hard and black, like a hair, now. What in the world could be causing this problem? It's almost like his spikes aren't finished growing underneath before they are ready to shed? Anyway, any help would be appreciated. It feels like a da**ed if you do da**ed if you don't situation. If I leave the shed it's not a good thing, yet if I pull the shed, it's also not good. Help! Thanks.....J
