QUICK LOOK IGUANA DIET REFERENCE:

NO-NO's: animal anything: protein, fat, dairy (except yogurt),perservatives, foods sprayed with chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides.

Do not pulverize their food. Food needs to be cut, chopped enough so that it is easier to digest and nutrients quickly absorbed.

AVOID OR LIMIT FOODS CONTAINING:
High oxalates
High phosphorus
High phytates
High purines
High tannins
High goitrogens

Glossary:
oxalates: there are 15 different types of oxalates, found in virtually every plant food in varying concentrations. Calcium oxalates are of most concern due to the ability to bind to the calcium iguanas consume (plant or supplement) and rendering it useless, unabsorbable, and then eliminated from the body.

phytates: found in virtually every plant food in varying concentrations. As with oxalates, phytates bind with calcium and inhibits its absorption. Best if *not* served with primary calcium source.

purines: concentrations in foods responsible for crystallization of urea in kidney stones, high uric acid levels, gout. Mainly found in animal proteins but also in plant foods in elevated quantaties.

tannin: chemical found in some plants that binds to protein and other minerals including iron and vitamin B12

goitrogens: cruciferous (name derived from the cross, notch observed when stem is cut)plant foods that are thyroid antagonists. Consuming significant amounts of these types of foods aggravate thyroid hormone production

phosphorus- 2nd most abundant mineral in the body. It is in every cell.Used in the transfer of energy and to maintain acid-base balance. Sign of toxicity=low blood calcium

IGUANAS: require a HIGH FIBER, HIGH CALCIUM diet. plant foods with 2xs as much calcium than phosphorus (2:1 CA:P ratio) should be given per single food item or overall diet. A good reference tool to begin to recognize foods and their calcium:phosphorus content is the USDA Nutrient Database at www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl
Every plant food consumed by humans is listed by the U.S. Dept of Agriculture. Pay particular attention to calcium, phosphorus ratios, also note fat & protein & fiber content to see if that food item is a good choice for your iguana/s.

THINGS THAT INHIBIT CALCIUM ABSORPTION:
1) High fiber
2) High oxalic acid (oxalates)
3) High phosphorus/phosphates
4) High phytic acid (phytates)
5) High goitrogenics
6) High doses of Vitamin C

HERE ARE SOME LISTS OF FOODS....GOOD & NOT SO GOOD that might help you make a decision regarding the foods you give your iguana/s.

HIGH CALCIUM FOODS:
*essential for the health and well being of your iguana/s

collard greens
mustard greens
watercress

*essential for the health & well being of your iguana/s

reconstituted prunes
figs
dates (also high in fat)
squash (winter varieties: acorn, butternut)

alfalfa/timothy hay (also higher in protein)
cranberries
bread

GOOD THIAMINE SOURCES IN FOODS:
acorn squash
Total cereal
white rice
breads (inc. cracked wheat, pumpernickel, rye, raisin)
oranges
watermelon

HIGH PLANT PROTEIN:
*protein is protein but plant protein is lower quality and easier for herbivores to digest

soy (tofu)
alfalfa pellets
alfalfa hay (more fiber less protein than pellet form)
timothy hay (more fiber , less protein than alfalfa pellets)
sprouts (inc. alfalfa,bean,wheat,soybean)
avocados
dates
legumes (primarily beans, peas)
dried pears & peaches
raisins
watermelon (trace)

HIGH OXALATES:
broccoli (also contain plant lice)
potato (also contains solanine)
grapefruit (can be caustic to mouth & stomach lining)
rhubarb (toxic and can cause serious illness to an iguana)
strawberries (extremely high oxalic acid content)
spinach
carrots
tomato
parsley
chards
kale
beet greens
turnip greens
wheat bread
plums
pears
oranges
lemons
limes
grapes
blackberries (trace)
peanuts

HIGH PHYTATE CONTENT
*best if not served with primary calcium source, same effect as oxalates

legumes (beans, green beans, peas)
cereal grains (corn,wheat,oats)
wheat bran
soybeans

HIGH GOITROGENS:
*impact thyroid hormone production

strawberries
spinach
peaches
bok choy
turnip greens
mustard greens
collard greens
soybeans
brussel sprouts
cauliflower
cabbages
radishes
kale
broccoli
kohlrabi
peanuts
rutabaga

HIGH FAT CONTENT:

dates
avocado (monosaturated)
dried pears & peaches
raisins
beans (most beans inc. kidney & garbanzo)
coconut (saturated)
nuts

*impair kidney & urinary function

legumes (beans inc. green beans & peas)

MODERATELY HIGH PURINE CONTENT:
asparagus
cauliflower
mushrooms
oatmeal
spinach
wheat germ
wheat bran

HIGH TANNIN CONTENT
*binds protein & hinders iron absorption & Vitamin B12

bananas
carrots
spinach
grapes
lettuce
onions

CYANOGENS: TOXIC CANCER CAUSING
*produce the deadly poison cyanide

lima beans
fruit seeds (mostly apple & apricot)

variety, moderation, and better choices
