Hi fellow herpers!
Meggy's vet was telling me before he spayed her that adult iguanas are very susceptible to kidney failure and that if she showed any signs of it, he may not be able to operate. (Luckily she didn't!) He said that they aren't sure what causes it but it is very prevalent. It is believed that it could be caused by a bacteria, or artificial light (he said that iguanas that are in natural sunlight have less occurance) or lack of moisture (humidity) in their environment, no one knows for sure. He recommended misting her at least several times a day in my climate (PA) and making sure she has some water every day to flush her kidneys well. He suggested using a syringe which I now do and give her about a teaspoon a day. (of course, you get more poops!) He also recommended sunlight when weather permits. Has anyone else heard about this? Her vet is Pres. of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians. Always something new to worry about!
