I've had absolutely no problem at all keeping the ambient temp in my main enclosure using a radiant heat panel. The unit has been operating 24/7 for the last 2 1/2 years now with absolutely no failure whatsoever. The house thermostat stays at 70* as well. At the very least I'd recommend using a ceramic heat emitter for ambient temps. The only thing you could potentially end up with when using a hot rock is a severely burned iguana as they have absolutely no safety shutoffs built into them - unless of course someone has decided to redesign them. I wouldn't know as I haven't looked at one in over 10 years now.
If you want to take the risk with your ig I guess you have the right to do so but please don't go around telling people that there OK to use. You evidently haven't seen first hand what thermal burns through the scale and down to the fascia look like on an iguana. I've had to deal with 3 so far - it's not pretty and the recovery rate is very low.
