:I've had absolutely no problem at all keeping the ambient temp in my main enclosure using a radiant heat panel. The unit has been operating 24/7 for the last 2 1/2 years now with absolutely no failure whatsoever. The house thermostat stays at 70* as well. At the very least I'd recommend using a ceramic heat emitter for ambient temps. The only thing you could potentially end up with when using a hot rock is a severely burned iguana as they have absolutely no safety shutoffs built into them - unless of course someone has decided to redesign them. I wouldn't know as I haven't looked at one in over 10 years now.
:If you want to take the risk with your ig I guess you have the right to do so but please don't go around telling people that there OK to use. You evidently haven't seen first hand what thermal burns through the scale and down to the fascia look like on an iguana. I've had to deal with 3 so far - it's not pretty and the recovery rate is very low.

In other peoples mouths or rephrasing to there own liking.First off i never suggested anyone use one and if you would have read the second line in my post you would have saw that.Second obviously they cant be all that bad.I've saw first hand what burns can occur with heatrocks as well as uth.The burns from the heatrock was caused by an idiotic friend of mine not having anything for heat other than a heatrock so the iguana basically stayed on it at all times and got pretty badly burned. The UTH i've witnessed was from one of my snakes and the burns werent serious. If you have an alternate heatsource in the cage with the heatrock the chances of a burn are very slim because then the ambient temps will be sufficient.
Havent tried radient heat panels but thanx for mentioning that.It sounds like a good alternative.Taking risks with any animal is what people who own them do everyday but if you take the time and energy to do a sufficient job at caging, lighting, heating(even with heatrocks),feeding, and learning then chances of something like a thermal burn are virtually non existent.I've been using heatrocks for 6 or 7 years and never once have had a single burn big or small happen to none of my animals so i must being doing something right,Even if its not to others liking.
